Are we becoming a socialist nation? What will it mean?

I think the title of the question is straightforward enough. I also wanted to add that I was answering a question on the UK version of yahoo answers, and the question was about the royal family and all.. and I had mentioned that I'm american and don't know too much about their system. One person answered "at least your country isn't socialist. Some of my tax money goes to Muslims who have multiple wives." Which brings me to another question, how long might it be until polygamy is acceptable in "the land of the free" or "the land of opportunity"..?
